Nice, Capital of the French Riviera 5th
largest town all over France with half a million inhabitants, suburbs
included, Nice has a 25 centuries old history, a rich and varied both
civil and religious architecture (from the Antiquity to the Turn of the
Century) and great museums (Chagall, Matisse, Chéret… to name but a
few). Nice is a crossroad between East, West, Africa and Northern Europe,
a location at the origin of an extraordinary cultural blending. A
good tour of Nice starts generally with a panoramic stop at Mt Boron Hill
(one of residential sections of Nice), which will give a good idea of the
size of the town and of its beautiful location by the Bay of Angels ; it
would also include a walking tour in the Old town, famous with its flower
market and some of the finest Baroque churches in the region. If
time is left, a visit of the Russian Church, that was built in 1865 by
order of Tsar Nicolas 1st
and
a walk through the olive grove gardens at Cimiez Hill (it shelters also
the ruins of the Roman town of Nicea) can eventually be included in the
tour. Although
a half-day tour is long enough to have a good sightseeing of the town,
Nice is such a rich place in itself, that it will provide matter for a
very interesting full-day tour, including or not museums. As
a full-day tour, Nice can be combined as well with almost all the other
interesting spots within a distance of about 30 km around
the town ; wether going east (Villefranche, Eze, Monaco…) or
west (Cannes, Vallauris, Antibes, Biot, St Paul…), that's plenty
of interesting places to visit (see descriptions in the corresponding
pages). Conditions
