St Tropez and its Hinterland That's
nearly 50 years ago, that the naked body of Bridget Bardot was lying on
the golden sand of the Pampelonna Bay. At that time, the fame of both the
little town of St Tropez and the one of Roger Vadim, the film maker of
"And God created woman", boomed amazingly. If
we except the crazily crowded summer months, St Tropez still looks like
the little Provençal village, it never ceased to be. To wander in its
narrow streets is a real happiness. The pier at first, in the shade of the
big yachts, where people stil secretly hope to glance at a movie star
face, then the "Sènequier " café, its terrace, a good place
from where to watch, and the pastry shop side showing some delicious
specialties : the famous Tropezian pie (soft creamy cake), candied fruits
and chestnut sweets. Finally, the little fish fruit and vegetable markets,
the "Ponche" section and the red and yellow campanile against
the deep blue sky ; the bust of the saint, that didnt think he would
become so famous one day, is still in the church. If time is left, people
can go for shopping and watch the Pétanque players arguing on Place des
Lices. This
is a good hour walking tour, that can eventually include a visit of the
Annonciade museum : an exceptionnally homogeneous collection of mainly
Neo-Impressionist works. Paintings by great masters like Matisse, Bonnard,
Seurat, Signac, Van Dongen… to name but a few ! What a light in these
works, that represent sometimes St Tropez as it used to be at the
beginning of the XXth century, a little sleeping village immersed in its
countryside, the wild and densely wooded range of the Maures mountains ; a
whole bunch of hill-perched villages : Gassin, one of the best panoramic
spots, Ramatuelle, former Sarazin fortress, Grimaud and its ruined castle...
all can be visited, and we can add the lake-village of Port-Grimaud, an
absolute "Provençal Venice", a few prestigious viniards, such
as Château Minuty, Bertaud-Belieu… So much to see in such a little area. Let's
not forget, a 40' drive only from St Tropez, the wine country of les Arcs
with more vineyards like Château Ste Roseline, Château St Martin, Château
de Berne, Château de Selle… and, of course, the so-called "Maison
des Vins" (literally translated by House of the Wines), the place
where to be taught by a wine expert how to better appreciate and
understand French wines. The
